Manufacture
Our New Living bags are made from the flax plant. The plant grows to around 4 ft and is uprooted rather than cut for harvesting to keep its properties suitable to making a linen fabric.
Harvesting is done in the fields where the flax is growing using large mechanical grabbers that pull the plant and lay them on the fields. The plants are then left for several weeks and turned regularly to break down the fibres that join the plant together due to the natural environmental exposure.
At this stage, the fibre develops the linen colour. The dry flax is then removed from the fields to refinery plants in large bails. Here the spinning process occurs where the flax fibres are made finer. eventually producing the natural linen material which is then spun on to yarns. From these yarns our onion bags are produced.
Due to the low energy required to produce this material when compared to other fabrics linen material is a win in our books.
